Hot Topic – Lilly’s Big Investment in Vaccines

This week’s Hot Topic asks if vaccines are back in fashion after Eli Lilly splashed out almost $4 billion on deals to buy three vaccine companies. Lilly is spending up to $1.5 billion to acquire shingles vaccine developer Curevo – in which VC Medicxi led a $110 million Series B investment round last year – and a similar amount on the Vaccine Company, which has jabs in the pipeline for Epstein-Barr virus, West Nile Virus, dengue fever and Zika. It’s also bought LimmaTech – which Novo Holdings invested in through its REPAIR Impact Fund – for up to $780 million. LimmaTech’s developing vaccines to protect against bacterial pathogens that have a high potential to develop resistant strains, such as S. aureus, thus helping in the vital battle against antimicrobial resistance. Great news for investment in vaccines and infectious diseases!
